Space
This project was an exploration of space. I began by sketching external profiles of different possible bowls. I began conservatively, then broadened by scope of possibility.
A constraint on this project was the ability to physically turn the bowl. This excluded some of the more complex designs. The shape I chose to pursue was one traditionally seen in ancient Mediterranean pottery. I wanted to explore the contrast in expectations and materials by utilizing a shape traditionally used in a different medium.
This still left the question of the interior of the bowl. I had originally planned on following the outside contour along the inside of the bowl, but as I was feeling the outside of the bowl I had an interesting idea. What if the interior shape of the bowl began with the slope of the outside curve, and continued rather than curving out again?
The final bowl was turned from African mahogany, and finished with boiled linseed oil.
